Breaks Interstate Park sandstone gorge overlook above the Russell Fork River in autumn

Hiking & Overlooks Near Flannagan Lodge

A locally written guide to the overlooks and trails of Breaks Interstate Park - the Grand Canyon of the South - plus the seasonal Canyon Zip Line, and Birch Knob Observation Tower above Clintwood, VA, where a clear day puts multiple states in a single panorama.

Two Anchors, One Basecamp

Dickenson County, Virginia is bookended by two of Southwest Virginia’s best hiking destinations: Breaks Interstate Park on the eastern edge of the county, and Birch Knob on the western edge above Clintwood. Flannagan Lodge sits between them in Haysi, which makes it the easiest place to base out of if you want to hike both in the same trip.

Breaks Park has the iconic rim overlooks - Towers Tunnel, Towers, Stateline, and Clinchfield - plus a network of trails that range from a paved walk to a steep drop into the gorge. In summer, the park’s Canyon Zip Line opens with trained professional staff for guided rides above the treetops.

Birch Knob is the quiet counterpart - a high summit with a stone observation tower and the kind of layered ridge views you normally have to fight a crowd for. Take it slow on the mountain roads and you’ll have it largely to yourself.

Sunrise and the post-storm hours are the most dramatic, when mist fills the gorge. Easy enough for a quick stop in driving clothes, spectacular enough to anchor a full visit.
