Discover the Legacy of John W. Flannagan Dam

The John W. Flannagan Dam, located in Dickenson County, Virginia, stands as a testament to visionary leadership and engineering excellence. Named in honor of Congressman John Williams Flannagan, Jr., who represented Virginia's Ninth District from 1931 to 1949, the dam reflects his dedication to the Appalachian Highlands.

Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938, the dam's construction commenced in 1960 under the guidance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was completed by 1964. Standing 250 feet tall and stretching 916 feet in length, this earth-filled structure plays a pivotal role in flood control, water supply, and recreation for the region.

The resulting John W. Flannagan Reservoir spans 1,145 acres with nearly 40 miles of shoreline, offering a haven for fishing, boating, and nature enthusiasts. The reservoir's pristine waters are home to diverse fish species, including bass, walleye, and catfish, making it a sought-after destination for anglers.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Breaks Interstate Park, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the South," and the Ralph Stanley Museum, celebrating traditional Appalachian music.
